Douglas County Health Department (DCHD) Pool Inspections

Swimming pools can be the source of many diseases and injuries, such as Giardia, Cryptosporidia, and E. coli as well as slips, falls, and accidental entrapment. The purpose of the DCHD Pool program is to assure that all public swimming pools and spas are maintained in a safe and healthful condition. In light of these considerations, the proper construction, maintenance, and operation of public swimming pools and spas are of significant public health importance. DCHD also reviews residential swimming pool plans for proper safety and construction as well. A licensing, inspection and education program helps ensure the safety of Douglas County swimmers whether they are enjoying a public pool or playing in their own backyard.

During public pool inspections, DCHD registered sanitarians check:

  • chemistry and water clarity
  • safety equipment
  • depth markers
  • turn-over rates
  • records
  • emergency phone and security fence
  • secure main drain gates
  • diving boards and lifeguards
  • restrictive access/self-closing, self-latching gate
  • pool operator’s license

DCHD also works with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and LLCHD to provide training to individuals who would like to become pool operators within the state of Nebraska. If you need to complete and obtain your pool operator’s license please take one of the provided courses.
