Lead screenings ("capillary test" where the sample is obtained by finger stick) can be performed by most primary care providers’ offices. In addition, WIC-eligible participants may have their child screened at any of the local WIC offices during their scheduled visits. Through community partnerships, lead screening tests are also provided at health fairs and other community events.

Venous blood tests (where the sample is obtained from a vein in the arm) can usually be drawn by primary care providers. Local WIC offices cannot provide venous blood testing.

Blood tests to determine lead levels in children are generally covered by Medicaid and most private insurance plans.

If the blood tests to determine lead levels in children are not covered by Medicaid or your private insurance plan, and you are unable to afford the test yourself, you should contact the Douglas County Health Department to see if you are eligible to receive a voucher for a (free) blood lead test. For more information, please call (402) 444-7825. [NOTE: The only location where a voucher can be used is at the UNMC Durham Outpatient Lab in the Durham Outpatient Center, 4400 Emile Street.]
