Imagine a place where people from across the community have an opportunity to grow healthy and succeed. A place where place doesn’t matter and everyone’s human potential is realized.

That is the goal of the Douglas County Health Department - the public health agency overseeing the well-being of more than a half million people in Eastern Nebraska. This responsibility is one we take with great seriousness.

It starts by connecting everyone to a field of opportunity, a health-based grid of care and nourishment that opens the door to great things.

Disease control is a primary focus as the Douglas County Health Department investigates all communicable disease reports, then takes action to prevent their spread. It starts before that by promoting disease prevention through education and vaccination.

The passionate pursuit of health equity is done with the realization that human potential unfilled is everyone’s human potential lost. No one’s health is safe until everyone’s health is safe. In that quest, the Douglas County Health Department also promotes environmental safety.

The Douglas County Health Department is prepared to address the reality of social determinants of health, knowing a person’s zip code is as important to their well-being as their genetic code. Access to good food, safe-affordable housing, exercise, and health care are fundamental.

We inspect pools to set a level of safety and we promote healthy life choices. DCHD works with food retailers to build their businesses around good nutrition. Through this, we strive to reduce chronic illness and build the local economy.

Children’s wellness, before and after birth, is part of the foundation we are building. Once it’s built, we need to make sure it grows into a bright future for everyone.

Promoting and protecting public health – that’s what we do.
