Keep Cool with Douglas County Health Department Advice
Â
The Douglas County Health Department wants everyone to take precautions in the extreme summer heat that is expected in the coming days.
Â
While outdoor living is a big part of summer fun in Douglas County, the heat and humidity that are expected in the coming days will make for potentially dangerous conditions.
Â
Here are some tips for avoiding heat-related health problems:
Â
·       People and pets should NEVER be left in a closed, parked vehicle.
·       Drink plenty of water. Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine or large amounts of sugar.
·       Limit outdoor activities to the cooler morning and evening hours. It is especially important for athletes who are playing or practicing outdoors to remain hydrated.
·       The people most at risk are those 65 years of age or older. You can help protect your elderly neighbors by checking on them during the heat wave.
·       Use a sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher when you are outside.
Â
Some of the most physically challenging conditions of the summer can be expected when the heat index gets close to or passes 100 degrees in the coming days.
